Nicaragua, a vigorous critic of the United States and a vocal ally of Hugo Chávez, the Washington-baiting president of Venezuela, stirred alarm in many Western and Latin American capitals a year ago when it proposed its candidacy for the presidency of the General Assembly.
But last month, it won the backing of the 33-member Latin American and Caribbean group at the United Nations with hardly a voice raised, and the endorsement, by acclamation, assures it of winning election to the post in the 192-member General Assembly in June.
